Freshwater Plants
Water Hyacinth.
A floating plant with glossy round leaves and trailing roots that double as natural shade and a nursery for fry. It soaks up excess nutrients fast — great for ponds and open-top tanks with bright light. (Note: regulated as invasive in some areas — keep it contained.)

Good tank mates
A floating pond and aquarium plant rather than an animal, so it has no temperament, but it shades the water below and can be grazed or uprooted by large or boisterous fish, goldfish, and big cichlids. It pairs well with calm community fish, bettas, and fry that benefit from cover, and its dangling roots give shrimp and small fish a place to forage. Note that it is a regulated invasive species in many regions, so never release it into natural waterways.
Good to know
Water hyacinth is one of the fastest-growing plants known and can double its population in a couple of weeks under strong light, which is why it's considered a serious invasive weed in warm climates.
