Freshwater Fish
Common Plecostomus.
The classic algae-eating pleco — armored, nocturnal, and beginner-tough. Just plan ahead: it can reach 18 inches and produces a lot of waste, so it belongs in a 75-gallon-plus tank with driftwood. Big, prehistoric, and full of character.

Good tank mates
Semi-aggressive and gets big, so it needs roomy, sturdy tankmates rather than a peaceful nano community. It generally ignores active mid- and upper-water fish of similar size (larger barbs, bigger tetras, bigger cichlids), but two large plecos in one tank can squabble over territory. Avoid tiny or delicate fish it can outcompete or harass, and don't house it with slow long-finned fish it might rasp at night.
Good to know
The common pleco can grow to around 18 inches, which is why a tank that suits it as a juvenile is usually far too small once it matures.
