American Flag Fish.
A North American killifish with a red, white, and blue-green pattern that really does suggest a flag. Hardy and beginner-friendly, and one of the better natural algae grazers — including hair algae. It can be nippy, so give it a 10-gallon-plus tank with room and tankmates that aren't too delicate.

Good tank mates
Semi-aggressive and a known fin-nipper, so pair it with similarly-sized, not-timid tankmates rather than dropping it into a peaceful nano community. It tends to do best in a species tank or with sturdy, faster fish: larger danios like giant danios, fast rasboras, or rainbowfish. Avoid long-finned or slow fish (bettas, fancy guppies, angelfish) and anything small enough to harass. If you're unsure about a specific pairing, call us and we'll help you match it.

Zebra Danio
Explicitly named in the Aquarium Co-op flagfish care guide as a proven compatible tankmate. Zebra danios are fast-swimming, similarly sized, and active enough not to be intimidated by a semi-aggressive male flagfish. Their speed reduces fin-nipping exposure and their water-parameter needs (pH 6.5–8.0, 65–77°F) overlap comfortably with the flagfish's preferred range.
Bronze Cory
Explicitly named in the Aquarium Co-op flagfish care guide. Peaceful, armored bottom-dwellers that occupy a completely different tank zone than the flagfish, eliminating territorial overlap. Their armor plating also makes them less vulnerable to opportunistic nipping, and they thrive in the same temperature and pH band.
Assorted Platy
Livebearers as a group are explicitly listed in the Aquarium Co-op flagfish guide as good companions. Platies are hardy, similarly sized (1.5–2.5 in), and share the flagfish's preference for slightly alkaline, moderately hard water. Their fins are short and rounded rather than flowing, reducing the fin-nipping risk that affects long-finned livebearers like fancy guppies.
