Zebra Danio.
The ever-popular zebra danio — silver-gold with horizontal blue stripes and boundless energy. Beginner-bulletproof and peaceful, it's a great first fish and a fine cycling helper; keep an active school in a 10-gallon-plus tank with a lid. Available as the natural fish or the bright GloFish strain.
In-store purchase only. Live fish, coral, and invertebrates are sold at our Erie store only. They cannot be bought online, and we do not ship live animals under any circumstances.

Live animals are sold in store only — we do not ship fish, coral, or invertebrates. Every animal is acclimated and health-checked in-house before it reaches the sales floor. This is a species we carry — it's most likely in the tanks around delivery days, but live stock changes daily. Please call (814) 456-9445 to confirm availability before you drive in.

Good tank mates
Peaceful and community-safe, and one of the easiest fish to pair, though its constant energy suits lively rather than timid tankmates. Good company includes other danios, rasboras, larger tetras, corydoras, and platies. Avoid slow, long-finned fish like male bettas or fancy guppies that the fast danios may out-swim and nip at, and skip much larger or aggressive fish. Keep zebra danios in an active school of six or more.
Good to know
The zebra danio (Danio rerio) is one of the most widely used model animals in science, prized because its embryos are transparent, which lets researchers watch organs develop in real time.

Bronze Cory
Peaceful bottom-dwellers occupying a completely different water column than danios. Many species (e.g. C. paleatus, C. trilineatus) are cool-water Corydoras with a preferred range of 70–77°F that overlaps squarely with the danio's comfortable mid-70s zone. No aggression, predation, or fin-nipping risk between these two.

Neon Tetra
Both are small, peaceful schooling fish. A working temperature of 72–75°F sits comfortably within the neon's 72–78°F range and the danio's 64–75°F range. StudioScaped's dedicated compatibility write-up for this exact pairing confirms it functions well with appropriate group sizes and tiered feeding to ensure neons get food before it all floats to the danios.

Honey Gourami
Honey gouramis are among the most peaceful labyrinth fish available; their 70–82°F range overlaps the danio's comfortable band at 70–75°F. Zebra danios are not classified as fin-nippers under normal conditions, so there is no harassment risk running in either direction. Both species tolerate neutral pH and moderately soft-to-hard water.
- R
Rainbowfish
Active, mid-water schooling fish with a peaceful temperament that matches the danio's energy level without aggression. Most Melanotaenia species (including Australian and Dwarf Neon varieties) thrive at 71–79°F, overlapping well with the danio's upper comfort range. pH tolerance (6.5–8.0) is also compatible. Aquarium Co-op lists rainbowfish as a confirmed compatible companion for zebra danios.
