Freshwater Fish
Harlequin Rasbora.
A coppery-orange rasbora marked with a bold black triangle — peaceful, hardy, and beautiful in a tight school. A beginner favorite; a group shoals beautifully in a planted 10-gallon-plus tank with soft water.

Good tank mates
Harlequins are peaceful and community-safe, so they're an easy fit for a calm community tank. Great matches are other small, peaceful fish: tetras, other rasboras, corydoras, small peaceful gouramis like honey gouramis, and small livebearers. A few real examples are ember tetras, neon tetras, and bronze cories. Steer clear of fin-nippers like tiger barbs and of larger or aggressive fish, and avoid any tankmate big enough to swallow a small rasbora.
Good to know
The harlequin rasbora is named for the bold black wedge-shaped patch on the rear half of its body.

Neon Tetra
A well-documented peaceful schooling companion with near-identical water requirements (pH 5.0–7.0, 72–77°F). Both species occupy the mid-water column without competing territorially, and multiple authoritative sources confirm this as one of the most natural community pairings for harlequin rasboras.

Bronze Cory
Peaceful, armored bottom-dwellers that share the same soft, slightly acidic Southeast Asian water conditions and occupy an entirely different tank level than the mid-water harlequins. Zero territory overlap, confirmed compatible across multiple care guides.

Rummy-Nose Tetra
A similarly sized, tight-schooling peaceful tetra with compatible water parameters (pH 5.5–7.0, temperature best held at 74–77°F where both species overlap). Both are non-aggressive mid-water schoolers, confirmed compatible by multiple sources.

Cherry Barb
One of the only barb species with no documented fin-nipping tendency. Stays under 2 inches, peaceful, and confirmed by multiple care guides as a safe small-barb companion for harlequin rasboras. Similar water parameter requirements; adequate space and cover recommended as both species use the mid-column.
- K
Kuhli Loach
Both species originate from the same Southeast Asian blackwater streams and share highly compatible parameters (pH 5.5–7.0, 73–77°F overlap). Kuhli loaches are nocturnal substrate-burrowers with no aggression toward mid-water fish, creating a textbook niche separation.
