A three-spot gourami in fluorescent red — a hardy labyrinth fish bred to glow under blue light. Beginner-friendly and air-breathing; give it a 20-gallon-plus tank with some surface cover. Males can get territorial, so watch tankmates.

Blue/Three-spot Gouramis (T. trichopterus) are specifically named as compatible mid-water companions for Pictus Catfish in multiple care guides. The documented fin-nipping from Pictus is directed at ultra-slow, long-finned nano fish (bettas, male guppies), not at an assertive, similarly-sized gourami that occupies a higher water column level. Shared tropical freshwater parameters.
Clown Loach
Peaceful bottom-dweller with no fin-nipping tendency. Seriously Fish lists loaches among recommended companions for T. trichopterus. Shares tropical freshwater parameters with overlapping temperature range. Occupies a different water column level than the gourami, reducing territorial conflict. Note: must be kept in a group of 6+ in a 75-gallon minimum tank.
