Freshwater Fish
Polar Blue Parrots.
A polar blue parrot cichlid — a small, pale-blue hybrid with the rounded body and friendly face of a parrot cichlid. Hardy and beginner-friendly; give a small group a tank with caves and open space. Peaceful enough for a community of similarly tempered cichlids.
We keep this species at our Erie store. Come and see it in the tanks, or call (814) 456-9445 and ask what we have in right now.

Good tank mates
These are a parrot-cichlid hybrid, and the listing doesn't specify a confirmed temperament, so compatibility depends on the individual and your setup. As cichlids they're best with similarly-tempered tankmates and caves to claim, not a delicate peaceful nano community. Pairings vary fish to fish, so call us for advice on matching them to what you already keep before you mix them in.
Good to know
Parrot cichlids are man-made hybrids rather than a wild species, which is why they have the distinctive rounded body and beak-like face.

Electric Blue Acara
One of the most docile medium cichlids available; overlapping parameters (pH 6.0–7.5, 72–82°F) align precisely with Polar Blue Parrot needs. Adults reach 6–7 in., making them poor prey targets. Aggression spikes briefly during spawning but is well-documented as manageable in a properly sized, cave-rich tank. Widely cited as a reliable Polar Blue Parrot companion on multiple keeper forums and care guides.

Red Spot Silver Dollar
Peaceful mid-water schooling fish (5–6 in.) whose size puts it above the Polar Blue Parrot's predation threshold and whose fast schooling movement keeps it out of the cichlid's substrate territory entirely. Water parameters (pH 6.0–7.5, 75–82°F) are a near-perfect match. Commonly paired with New World cichlids including Severums and Oscars in the hobby. Must be kept in groups of 6+ for best results; will consume live plants.

Bristlenose Pleco
Armored, algae-grazing bottom-dweller (4–5 in.) that occupies the same substrate zone as the Polar Blue Parrot but is protected by heavy scutes. Widely kept with Central and South American cichlids. Risks are real — cichlids can harass plecos around caves — but are mitigated by providing dedicated pleco caves (PVC pipe or terracotta) separate from the cichlid's spawning territory. Water parameters overlap cleanly (pH 6.5–7.5, comfortable to 82°F).
- G
Golden Severum
Peaceful-to-semi-aggressive South American cichlid with overlapping water parameters (pH 6.0–7.5, 75–82°F). Commonly recommended alongside Polar Blue Parrots by experienced keepers. Its larger adult size (8–10 in. in the aquarium, not 7–8 as often cited) means it is unlikely to be bullied and poses zero predation risk to the Polar Blue Parrot. Confirmed as a compatible medium-cichlid pairing across multiple authoritative sources.
- F
Firemouth Cichlid
Central American cichlid sharing the Polar Blue Parrot's semi-aggressive but bluffing temperament; both species use threat displays rather than sustained combat. Adult size (5–6 in.) is comparable to the Polar Blue Parrot, eliminating predation risk in either direction. Water parameter overlap is solid (pH 7.0–8.0 vs. Polar Blue Parrot 6.5–7.5; both can be maintained comfortably at neutral 7.0–7.2). Territorial friction during breeding is manageable with adequate cave coverage and tank footprint.
