The percula clownfish is the species from Finding Nemo — distinguished from the ocellaris by thicker black outlines on its white bands — and this XL specimen tops out around 3.5 inches. Beginner-friendly and reef-safe, it hosts in anemones or leather corals and fits any 30-gallon-plus reef; an anemone is not required.

Good tank mates
A peaceful true percula clownfish suited to reef and saltwater community tanks with easygoing tankmates like gobies, firefish, cardinalfish, and dwarf angels. Keep only one clownfish or a single bonded pair, since unpaired adults will fight, and avoid large predators such as lionfish, big groupers, and eels. A larger XL specimen is typically the dominant female of any future pair, so add only a smaller individual if you want to pair it.

Firefish Goby
Peaceful dartfish that occupies the mid-to-upper water column; Percula clowns are among the most docile clownfish species and multiple aquarists confirm this pairing works in 29+ gallon tanks without harassment. Firefish are completely reef-safe and non-aggressive toward other species.
Green Chromis
Small, peaceful damselfish confirmed compatible with Percula and Ocellaris clownfish in 30+ gallon reef tanks. Any aggression issues are strictly intraspecific (within the chromis group) and do not extend to clownfish.
Royal Gramma
Hardy, 100% reef-safe basslet with confirmed compatibility with clownfish. Occupies cave and crevice habitat while clownfish stay near their host area, so niche separation prevents territorial overlap. Brief boundary chasing is normal but not harmful to clownfish.
Banggai Cardinalfish
Slow-moving, peaceful cardinal that hovers in open water and ignores clownfish; no documented aggression toward Amphiprion species. Keep as a single specimen or confirmed pair to avoid intraspecific fighting. Prefer captive-bred stock due to IUCN conservation status.
Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
Fully reef-safe cleaner invert; clownfish are explicitly listed as excellent tankmates. Actively operates cleaning stations and poses zero threat to fish or corals. Only incompatible with shrimp-predating species (hawkfish, puffers) which are not part of this setup.
