The largest and feistiest of the clownfish — deep maroon crossed with white or gold bands. Hardy but territorial, so give it room and tankmates that can stand up to it. Reef-safe and a bold, long-lived centerpiece clown.

Good tank mates
The maroon is the largest and most aggressive of the clownfishes, and it is best kept as the dominant fish or in a single bonded pair, never with other clownfish species. It works in tanks with similarly sturdy fish that can hold their own, but it will harass smaller, timid, or slow tankmates and may claim and defend a large territory. It is reef-safe with corals and invertebrates, but plan its tankmates carefully and ask the staff if you are mixing it with peaceful community fish.
Good to know
Maroon clownfish show extreme size difference between the sexes, with the dominant female growing much larger than her mate, and they are recognized by the white or gold head bars over a deep maroon body.

Royal Gramma
Cave-dweller that colonizes lower rock crevices — a completely different niche from the anemone territory the maroon defends. Multiple sources confirm clownfish compatibility; any territorial displays from the gramma are typically mock charges that rarely result in contact. Adequate rockwork keeps their zones separated.
Banggai Cardinalfish
Calm, slow-hovering mid-water fish that ignores the clownfish's anemone corner entirely. Reef2Reef keeper consensus explicitly names cardinals as among the best maroon clownfish tankmates, and FishLab lists them as a reliable pairing. Captive-bred specimens preferred given IUCN endangered status.
Yellow Watchman Goby
Sand-bed burrower that establishes its territory at the substrate level, well away from the anemone zone. Territorial only to its own burrow entrance, not to other species. Published reef care guides confirm compatibility with clownfish in tanks with a sandy bottom and adequate rockwork.

Cleaner-station fish that even highly territorial species typically tolerate; occupies rock surfaces performing parasite removal rather than hovering in open water near the anemone. Documented as compatible with maroon clownfish by FishLore and Reef2Reef community threads. Their recognized ecological role as parasite cleaners provides a protective buffer that most gobies lack.
